STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA DELIVERED BY H.E. AMBASSADOR DUNKAN LAKI-MUHAMUZA, DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA TO THE UN, AT THE JOINT MEETING OF THE SECOND COMMITTEE AND ECOSOC ON THE THEME: "FOSTERING SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT SOCIETIES IN UNCERTAIN TIMES" (New York, 15 October 2024) |
Mr. Chair, Excellencies, Colleagues,
I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.
The Group welcomes this joint meeting and its theme as it is related directly to economic growth in developing countries.
In uncertain times such as these, there is need to foster sustainable and resilient societies. Countries therefore need to ensure that science, technology and innovation contribute to the efforts to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions and hunger, and to reduce inequalities, in addition to areas such as food security and nutrition, health, education, social protection, water and sanitation, energy, climate and environment.
Excellencies,
The key elements of resilience investment strategies, ought to support developing countries to catalyze increased private sector investment in sustainable development, including by promoting inclusive and innovative finance mechanisms and partnerships and by creating a more enabling domestic and international regulatory and investment environment, and through the catalytic use of public financing.
We therefore call for the promotion of resilience investment strategies that have a disaster risk-informed approach to sustainable development that integrates disaster risk reduction into policies, programmes and investments at all levels.
We also call for significantly increasing investments to close the gender gap, including in the care and support economy, acknowledging the linkage between poverty and gender inequality and the need to strengthen support for institutions in relation to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The Group is confident that our discussions this year at the Second Committee would provide guidance for our collective efforts towards fostering sustainable and resilient societies in these uncertain times.
Thank you.
