STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA DELIVERED BY H.E. AMBASSADOR GODFREY KWOBA, DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA TO THE UN, AT THE PRESENTATION OF REV.1 OF THE PACT FOR THE FUTURE (New York, 15 May 2024)

Distinguished co-facilitators of the Summit of the Future Excellencies,

We have the honor of deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

The Group highly appreciates the significant effort that has been made by you Amb. Neville Gertze of the Republic of Namibia, and Amb. Antje Leendertse of the Federal Republic of Germany, and your staff, to the Rev 1 of the Pact of the Future.

From the onset we wish to applaud the fact that the co-facilitators have provided a concise revised draft with a significant reduction from more than 230 pages to 20 pages.

The group also notes that effort has been made to include several aspects of the G77 to the draft. The Group will, however, have to examine the draft more closely to ensure that the key objectives of the Group are reflected in the Pact of the Future. Additionally, we would like to stress the need for ample time to be granted to delegations to consult.

Distinguished Co-facilitators,

The G77 and China confirms its commitment to actively engaging in this very important intergovernmental process through focusing on key priorities. We look forward to reaching a concise, action-oriented and ambitious outcome agreed by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations.

Thank you.
