STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY H.E. AMBASSADOR AHMED HAMID, DELEGATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF SUDAN, AT THE OPENING PLENARY OF THE 30TH SESSION OF THE SUBSIDIARY BODY FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVICE (SBSTA) (Bonn, Germany, 1 June 2009)

Madam Chair,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China. Allow me at the outset to express our sincere appreciations to the Government of Germany for hosting our meeting, and for the climate change Secretariat for its excellent arrangements

I would also like to assure you of our continued support and cooperation to make tangible progress in all agendas under the SBSTA

Madam Chair,

The Group of 77 and China considers technology development and transfer as key to the achievement of the ultimate objectives of the Convention. Effective development and transfer of technologies from developed country Parties to developing countries determines the extent to which developing countries are able to meet their commitments under the Convention. The Group welcomes the three reports prepared by the EGTT as mandated by decision 3/CP.3 and the synthesis of technology needs prepared by the secretariat. The Group stands ready to participate constructively in the discussion of these reports with the view to enhancing the development and transfer of technology in a more effective manner now, up to and beyond 2012.

Madam Chair,

The Group looks forward to consider the progress report on the implementation of the activities of the second phase of the Nairobi Work Program and to assess the extent to which these activities and their implementation are contributing to improving the developing countries' understanding of vulnerability and adaptation and enabling them to take informed adaptation action.

Madam Chair,

The Group is committed to engage and negotiate in a good faith and open manner in all the discussions under the SBSTA and is resolved to make a real progress in all issues under consideration in this session.

I thank you.
