STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF PAKISTAN ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA AFTER ADOPTION OF THE LAW OF THE SEA RESOLUTION (A/62/L.27) DURING THE PLENARY OF THE 62ND SESSION OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY (New York, 21 December 2007) |
Mr. President,
The Group of 77 and China made a concrete proposal on Section X and Section XIV of this resolution. These two sections dealt with matters related to marine biodiversity and the Informal Consultative Process. The Group's position was carefully reflected in the proposal. However, an agreement could not be achieved on that proposal.
It was for the sake of a compromise that the Group accepted the joint proposal made by Pakistan and the USA as this proposal for the first time acknowledged problems related to legal regime beyond exclusive economic zone and addressed issues related to capacity building and goods and services derived from marine genetic resources. This proposal also kept doors open for future consultations on these issues.
There is a need to ensure better reflection of these issues and matters related to intellectual proprietary rights. Hence, the Group remains committed to continue its efforts to elaborate its position on these issues in future.
I thank you.
