STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY MR. IMTIAZ HUSSAIN, MINISTER, PERMANENT MISSION OF PAKISTAN TO THE UNITED NATIONS, ON AGENDA ITEM 127: UNITED NATIONS OFFICE FOR PARTNERSHIPS, AT THE FIFTH COMMITTEE OF THE 62ND SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY (New York, 18 October 2007) |
Mr. Chairman,
I have the honour to make this statement on behalf of Group of 77 and China under Agenda Item 127.
2. The Group of 77 and China would like to welcome and thank the Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships for the presentation of the report in document A/62/363. The Group would also like to express its appreciation and thanks to the Chairman of the ACABQ for the introduction of the Committee's report.
3. The Group of 77 and China would like to convey its deep appreciation to the UN Office for Partnerships for its important work and world-wide accomplishments in diverse fields ever since its establishment in 1998. The Office has demonstrated impressive performance since its inception. The allocation of approximately one billions dollars for 400 projects implemented by 39 UN agencies in 123 countries in critical areas such as children's health, women, population, environment, peace, security, human rights and MDGs speak volumes about the performance of the Office. The Group would like to commend the Office for its projects aimed to support the national efforts in many countries for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
4. The Group of 77 and China welcomes the Office's ongoing efforts to seek a new tranche of one billion dollars to support the United Nations causes. The Group would like to convey its appreciation to all those foundations and civil society actors who have contributed in this effort. We consider the UN Office for Partnerships as a gateway between the UN system and the private sector, foundations and civil society and its activities in conformity with the World Summit outcome document. The interest exhibited by hundreds of new prospective partners in carrying out activities in collaboration with the UN Office for Partnerships attests the credibility of the Office in the private sector and foundations. The Group of 77 and China also takes note of the continuous efforts of the Office to improve its programme delivery by making use of the lessons learnt. The Group of 77 and China would like to assure the United Nations Office for Partnerships of its continuous support.
I thank you Mr. Chairman.
